Later this week, Premier of the Cayman Islands, the Hon Alden McLaughlin will host four members of the UK’s parliament in the Cayman Islands. The four MPs, who are members of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Cayman Islands will participate in a 4- day visit designed to educate them on Cayman’s culture, economy and the special
relationship with the UK. The visiting MPs are: Andrew Rosindell MP, Henry Smith MP, Col Bob Stewart MP and Martin Vickers MP. Eric Bush, the Cayman Islands Representative to the United Kingdom, will escort the MPs and lead the visit. The itinerary includes courtesy visits and briefings with the acting Governor, the Premier, the Speaker of the House, Cabinet office and other MLAs from the Government and the Opposition. Meetings are also planned with representatives from the financial services sector, tourism and health care industries Discussions will centre on Cayman’s successes to date, the projected path of Cayman’s economic development as well as the ongoing discussions regarding the future relationship between the Cayman Islands and the UK. It is intended that the group gain insight into the key industries the people of the Cayman Islands rely on for employment and also those industries that support the most vulnerable. The MPs will also be shown successful conservation work, hurricane preparedness and disaster relief and management systems.
Premier, the Hon Alden McLaughlin said, ‘During a time that we are discussing the future relationship between the Cayman Islands and the UK, it is of paramount importance that we have UK lawmakers who see the Islands first hand, so they can see and understand the many facets of Cayman’s culture, history and our economic drivers. Hosting this visit of UK MPs is part of our ongoing engagement strategy with the UK Government.’
What is the APPG?
The All Party Parliamentary Group for the Cayman Islands (APPG) exists to maintain links
with, and develop an understanding of, the Cayman Islands within UK Parliament. Mr Bush
and members of the APPG meets on a regular basis to discuss matters of interest relating
to the Cayman Islands. Members of the APPG regularly speak in the halls of parliament to
discuss and debate issues related to the Cayman Islands.
The Group comprises members from the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and
includes representatives from all three main political parties. The Chairman of the group is
Sir Graham Brady MP who was not able to join the current delegation but has visited
before and looks forward to joining the follow up visit.
