2017 saw Caymanian athletes head to Gotland for the XVII Island Games and having participated in one of the biggest sporting events of the summer for 20 years, the islands had every reason to celebrate.

Having secured the coveted fourth place medal standing at the 2013 games in Bermuda and being the holders of numerous Island Games records, there is no doubt that The Cayman Islands produce some of the world’s finest sportsmen and women, including Crystal Robinson, Schwannah McCarthy, Calicia Burke and renowned coveted track and field athlete, Cydonie Mothersille.

With the majority of gold medal winners going on to become international champions, all eyes are on two-time Island Games triple jump gold medallist, Carl Morgan. After securing first place in both the Isle of Wight 2011 and Bermuda 2013 games, Morgan is back with a vengeance to not only return to the Cayman shores with a Gold medal but also retain his 2011 record.

Mr Eric Bush, Representative for the Cayman Islands Government commented: “Whilst many people will have heard of the Cayman Islands, few will associate it with professional sport and yet it is such an integral part of our community. For 20 years, our athletes have proudly represented the islands at these games and it’s such a proud moment for us to see our very own sportsmen and women go on to achieve tremendous results. With world-recognised individuals such as Carl and Cydonie who act as such a great inspiration, we recognise the value of competitions such as the Islands Games in the build up to both the World Championships and Olympics.”
