Marking an historic moment for the Cayman Islands Government Office in the UK, we are launching a campaign in search of relatives of one of the the first Welsh settlers of the uninhabited Islands in 1658.

The two first settlers of our previously uninhabited tropical paradise were believed to be a Welshman called ‘Walter’ and a Cornishman called ‘Bawden’ – both said to have been members of Cromwell’s forces in the West Indies.  Their names subsequently morphed into ‘Watler’ and ‘Bodden’, which to this day are prevalent family names on the Islands.

The search for relatives of Caymans’ first settlers is part of a campaign to raise the awareness, knowledge and understanding of the 360-year relationship that exists between the Cayman Islands and Wales and Britain.

Commenting on the Cayman Welsh connection, Eric Bush, Cayman Islands Representative to the UK said:

“Just like the Welsh, we are immensely proud of our national identity, culture and history. Cayman has a rich and diverse population today – but it all began with these original two settlers, including a Welshman called ‘Walter’.

“It would be great to find a family or persons from Wales that may have a connection with the Watler who settled in the Islands 360 years ago.”

Research  shows that Walter/Walters is a commonly found name in Wales with notable concentrations in around Glamorgan, Monmouthshire and Pembrokeshire – it can be traced back more than 500 years. We are hoping to find those who might be able to prove a direct link, and if we do, our aim is to offer them the chance of a lifetime to visit our beautiful islands and reunite them with Caymanian Watlers.

To enter for a chance to be considered. Welsh Walter/Walters or Watlers should fill in the form above.

Alternatively, entries can be accepted by completing your own research through Ancestry.com; and posting across social platforms Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #IamCayman.
