BOTC Passport Applications

Applying for a BOTC Passport (First-time or Renewal)

When applying from the UK, there are two ways to apply for a British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) passport. Both options are outlineed below, along with important considerations for each method.

If you are applying from the Cayman Islands, please contact the Cayman Islands Passport and Corporate Services Office by email at corporate@gov.ky, by phone +1(345)943-7678 or in person at Sussex House, 128 Elgin Avenue, George Town.

When applying for a BOTC passport from the UK, whether for a first-time application or a renewal, the passport issued will not feature the Cayman Islands variant. This means the cover will not display “Cayman Islands.” The Cayman Islands variant is issued only for applications made from within the Cayman Islands.

Option One – Online Application

This option is recommended by HMG, as it offers a highly efficient way to submit your application.

Individuals wishing to renew/apply for a first-time BOTC passport from the UK can apply online at Apply online for a UK passport – GOV.UK.

Please note that there is no separate link for renewing BOTC passports; this link is used for the renewal of all types of British passports.

Once your application is received, the examiner will determine your nationality status based on the details of any previous passports and any supporting documents you are asked to provide. When submitting these documents, you may wish to note in your cover letter that you are applying either for the renewal of a British Overseas Territories (BOTC) passport or for a first-time British Overseas Territories (BOTC) passport.

Please note that for first-time applications submitted from within the UK, where the applicant holds one or more additional passports, HM Passport Office (HMPO) normally requires submission of the original passport(s) and does not usually accept colour photocopies. The acceptance of colour copies of all pages of each passport is generally intended for applicants applying from outside the UK, where retaining the original passport may be necessary for identification or legal purposes. For renewal applications, HM Passport Office (HMPO) may accept colour copies of passports other than the passport being renewed, in place of the original passport(s).

Please refer to the guidance notes provided on GOV.UK for a detailed list of the documents required for your BOTC passport renewal application.

Option Two – Paper form application

If applying by paper, you must use a standard passport application form, available at participating Post Offices that offer passport services. Please note that there is no separate paper form specifically for renewing BOTC passports; applicants must use the standard British passport renewal form.

When completing the form, we recommend that applicants use the additional information section (Section 8) to state: ‘British Overseas Territories Passport Renewal – Cayman Islands’ to help ensure the application is processed correctly.

You must use the Paper Check and Send service at your nearest Post Office. To find a UK Post Office branch that offers this service for passport applications, use the Post Office Branch Finder tool: Post Office Branch Finder.

  1. Enter your location details (e.g., town or postcode).
  2. Select ‘Passport Check and Send – paper’ from the ‘Services’ dropdown menu.
  3. Review the list of nearby branches that provide the service.

Please refer to the passport application form and guidance notes for a detailed list of the documents required for your BOTC passport renewal application.
